10 Simple AC Maintenance Tips You Need to Practice

If you want to extend the life of your heating and cooling equipment while cutting energy costs, take matters into your own hands and practice preventive maintenance.

Air Conditioning Treatment Done Right

Maintaining your HVAC equipment doesn’t have to be a drag, and you’d be surprised how much a little TLC can pay off. The best part is you don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive tune-ups, repairs, or any other outrageous HVAC service. This blog will show you how far a little maintenance can go, with these 10 tips:

1. Keep the Equipment Clean

This is a fairly simple routine to perform regularly. First, rinse off the AC unit. Once it dries, vacuum the fins and brush off any remaining debris. When you do this, make sure to use a soft-bristle brush. For best results, repeat these steps at least once every month.

2. Purchase a Programmable Thermostat

This is a must-have for today’s AC technology. Programmable thermostats can help any homeowner save money on energy bills. Instead of changing the dial to lower the temperature, just install one of these cutting-edge solutions and program your cooling system to rest at different temperatures during certain parts of the day.

3. Switch Out the Air Filters

One of the most overlooked elements of HVAC is air filtration. Fortunately, this is usually a quick fix. When performing annual maintenance on your AC system, you’ll want to shut off the central unit’s power. Let the unit sit idle for about 30 minutes and then clean off any dirt or dust. Finally, replace the old filters with clean ones.

4. Inspect Refrigerant Lines

Perform a thorough inspection on every refrigerant pipe. Make sure each tube is properly covered with the right layer of coolant insulation. If you spot any holes, cracks, or punctures, make a note of the defective area. You’ll need to replace the tube with a new insulation sleeve.

5. Unclog the Condensing System

Your AC system’s condenser can become a magnet for debris, leaves, dirt, and other build-up. You may even find weeds and vines in this part of your unit. Remove any obstruction, wipe down the fan blades, and tighten any loose bolts or screws.

6. Use Whole-House Fans

Whole-house fans collect hot air from higher areas of the home and convert it a cool yet comfortable breeze. It only takes a few minutes to install these fan systems. Just hang them on top of any door or high-hanging window and start turning heat into a pleasant airflow.

7. Put Blinds on the Windows

You might be surprised how easily warm air travels into your building. If you really want to control the heat in your home or office, pay close attention to your windows. Keep them closed and covered with blinds or drapes, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

8. Check Insulation

Insulation wears down easily over time. Inspect any area coated by insulation and remove any rotted or damaged layers. To be safe, it’s best to have a trained professional handle any insulation work.

9. Invest in a Fin Comb

The cage of your AC system bends easily over time. Using a fin comb is an easy way to straighten the fins on the condensing unit. The comb is a specialty tool that works by being run or scraped across the fins and bending them back into shape. Remember to wear gloves when doing this to avoid getting cut.

10. Cover the Condenser

Never wrap your condenser with a tarp. This is a fire hazard, even if your AC system rests idle during the winter. After the summer weather subsides, cover the top of the unit with a weighted piece of plywood.
